PM Abiy, AUC Chair Congratulate New Somalia President on Reelection

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has extended congratulatory messages to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud after his reelection as President of Somalia.

After being voted out of power in 2017, Mohamud returned to the nation’s top office, defeating the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi ‘Farmaajo’ in an election decided by legislators late Sunday.

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia and Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, were among the first to congratulate Mohamud on his reelection on Monday.

“I would like to congratulate former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on being re-elected as the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Prime Minister Abiy wrote on twitter.

Similarly, the Chairperson of AUC also congratulated Mohamud on his historic election as the 10th president of Federal Republic Somalia.

“My warmest congratulations to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his election,” Mahamat said.

The chairperson also commended the outgoing President Farmaajo for demonstrating strong leadership and statesmanship through his gracious acceptance of the election outcome.

Mohamud, who served as Somalia’s president between 2012 and 2017, has promised to transform Somalia into “a peaceful country that is at peace with the world”.

The AUC Chair reiterated “the continued support of the AU to Somalia in the country’s efforts to deepen democratic governance, promote national reconciliation and restore peace, stability and security.”
