ADDIS ABABA – The European Union (EU) said on Wednesday it is supporting IGAD’s effort to mitigate the the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the sub-region.
The EU Launched last year, as an immediate gesture of solidarity to respond to the call for international support made by IGAD Heads of States, Health and Finance Ministers to help to mitigate the impact of the pandemic in the Horn of Africa.
To this aim, the European Union has allocated 60Million Euro in the context of the European Union – Regional Indicative Programme 2014-2020 for Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean.
The response is broad and includes sectors such as health, WASH, gender, infrastructure, provision of critical supplies and safe trade, according to the EU delegation in Ethiopia.
To complete the action, Germany, through GIZ, is supporting development of digital solutions relevant for COVID-19 health response, such as a regional surveillance and monitoring system to monitor this crisis.
The project is now delivering 3.5 million surgical masks, 24 ambulances, 8 mobile labs, and COVID-19 test kits.
Specifically for Ethiopia, 500,000 Surgical masks, 100,000 Surgical caps, 99,990 Masks N95, COVID-19 test kits for more than 25,000 people, 2 ambulances are being delivered .
An advanced ambulance,a mobile laboratory and 500,000 Nitrile Gloves will be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.
Items are being handed over to the Government of Ethiopia by IGAD to be further distributed to Hawli, Metema, Gambella, Kumruk, Tog Wajaale and Moyale and where the need is.
The project is managed by UNOPS, coordinated by IGAD and implemented by UNICEF, IOM, and TMEA.
