More than 63kg of Cocaine Seized at Addis Ababa Airport

ADDIS ABABA – Four foreigners have been arrested at Addis Ababa Bole International airport after police found a total of 63 kilograms of cocaine hidden in their luggage.

In a statement today, the Ethiopian Federal Police said the arrests were made on two different smuggling attempts.

The latest arrest was made on Monday evening following a search on passengers that flew in from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A total of 42 kilograms of cocaine was found stacked in the luggage of three Nigerian nationals.

The smugglers were flying from São Paulo airport to various countries via Addis Ababa Bole international airport with 1,895 pellets of cocaine.

They, however, were intercepted at Addis Ababa and arrested for illicit drug trafficking, said police, despite their futile attempt to initiate a brawl with airport workers and create chaos as diversion to escape.

In another operation earlier this month, Police also seized 1049 pellets of cocaine that weighed 12.38kg hidden in luggage belonging to a Brazilian Woman.

Police said the suspect, who was going from São Paulo to Dubai via Addis Ababa, was arrested together with the drug on Thursday, March 3, 2022.
