Customs Capture Illicit Items worth 71.8mln Birr Last Week

ADDIS ABABA – Contraband goods with a total value of 71. 8 million Birr were captured last week, customs officials reported on Monday.



The Ethiopian Customs Commission said the majority of the contraband goods worth 62.8 million birr were seized while they were illegally transported into the nation.

The remaining 5.8 million birr worth of goods were intercepted while they were about to be smuggled out of Ethiopia.

Electronics, Clothes, coffee, medicines, cosmetics, weapons, clothes, Khat, narcotic substances and currencies of different foreign countries dominated the list of items captured.

They were intercepted in various branches of the Ethiopian Customs Commission with the support of federal police and tip-off received from the public.



The majority of the seizure was made in Moyale, Akaki Kality and Jigjiga Customs Branches, said the Commission, putting the value of the items captured in each of the three branches at 24.3mln birr, 12.8mln birr and 7.4 million, respectively.

In the first week of March, customs officials seized more than 104 million birr worth of contraband goods from illegal smugglers.
