ADDIS ABABA – At least 13 people were killed in a traffic accident involvin a truck an a minibus in the West Wollega zone of Oromia regional state, Police say.
The deadly crash occurred in an area called Melka Gassi of Gimbi District in the early hours of Friday.
The cross country truck, with 07550 plate number, ran over a public bus, taking the lives of 13 people, said a statement West Wollega Zone communication bureau issued today.
Investigation is currently ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
Preliminary investigation results, however, incompetency on behalf of the truck driver may have been the main reason, said sergeant Diriba Shanko, traffic coordinator at the district in the statement.
It is the second fatal crash that have been reported in Ethiopia in two consecutive days.
On Thursday, six passengers were killed after a bus they were traveling overturned in Gedeo Zone of SNNP Region.
Thirteen others were also severely injured due to the accident, according to Police.
Traffic accidents are relatively common in Ethiopia despite having one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world. Bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of road safety and lack of road signs blamed for most of the accidents.
