Ethiopian Maritime Authority Gets New Executive-Director

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed former state minister of transport Yehualashet Jemere as head of Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA).

In a statement today, the authority said Yehualashet has been appointed as director-general of the Maritime Authority as of Jan 11, 2022.



He replaced Mekonnen Abera who played a key role in the establishment of the Authority and served as Executive-director for fourteen years.

The Ethiopian Maritime Authority was established, under Ministry of Transport, in 2007.

In his new role, Yehualashet will be working to ensure the standards of Ethiopia’s maritime training and seafarer certification, marine & dry ports, and transport logistics infrastructure.

Previously, he served in a variety of professional capacities in both the private and public sectors including as State Minister of Transport last year.



He also worked as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Rail Network Division Head at Ethiopian Railways Corporation.

Yehualaeshet, a Civil Engineer, has M.Sc. degree in Structural Engineering, specialization Road and Railway Engineering from the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands (2010). He also has an MBA degree in International Business from Lincoln University, Oakland, California (2017).
