Ethiopia Reports over 5, 000 New Covid Cases

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia on Saturday recorded 5, 013 new Covid-19 cases, pushing its infections total to 395, 750.

The country conducted more than 14, 000 testes to identify the in the positive cases on the day, says a ministry of health report for the day.



Including the new cases, the country recorded a total of 19, 940 Covid-19 infections since December 19 out of 71, 794 tests conducted.

The infection rate has shown a 7 percent increase as compared to the previous week, according to Ethiopian public health institute (EPHI).

The new cases registered on Saturday took the confirmed active cases count 36, 723. At least 198 of them are severely sick and are now receiving medical treatments in hospitals, according to the report.

It also says 6 more Covid-related deaths and only 106 recoveries were also recorded in the same day, pushing the death toll to 6, 894 and recoveries count to 352, 131.

The vaccine drive which began on March 13, this year, has also continued Saturday, during which about 31, 000 doses Covid-19 vaccine have been offered to the public.



The Ministry of Health started offering the Covid-19 vaccine in Ethiopia on March 13 – a week after it received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility.

To date, the country has administered 10.83 million doses while the number of fully vaccinated Ethiopians to reach 9, 343, 467.
