Addis Ababa Extends Ban on Eviction & Rent Increase by Three Months

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa city administration has extended an eviction and rent increase ban until February 24, 2022, its Communication Bureau announced on Friday.

The resolution to ban landlords in the capital from either increasing house rents or evicting tenants was approved by the City Council last August.

The move was a part of measures aimed at tackling rising inflation and its impacts on residents of the city.

The communication bureau said the ban has now been extended for an additional 90 days.

“The administration found it important to extend it for the next three months as this is a time to focus more on the ongoing” fight against threats posed on national sovereignty, said the bureau.

The latest ban becomes effective as of Friday, November 26, 2021.
