Ethiopia Hold Ghana to 1-1 draw in Fifa World Cup Qualifier
ADDIS ABABA – Advantage South Africa after Ethiopia held Ghana to 1-1 draw in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday afternoon.
The game was played in Soweto, South Africa, after the Confederation of African Football or Caf deemed Bahir Dar Stadium unfit to play on last Month.
In the first half, the Black Stars were in the ascendancy after taking advantage from a set piece in the 22nd minute. They found the back of the net with a smart strike from Andre Ayew.
The Walia Ibex, who are already out of the running for Qatar, created a fair few shots at goal after that but they failed to equalize, finishing the first half a goal down.
In the second half, Ethiopian skipper Getaneh Kebede cancelled Ghana’s first-half lead with a well-taken strike in the 79th minute.
With both teams sharing a point, Ghana has now leveled with South Africa on points in Group G with 10, leaving their return fixture on Sunday against Bafana Bafana a must win for them to progress to the next round.
In another match played on Thursday evening, South Africa beat Zimbabwe 1-0, putting them in a stronger position to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Thursday’s results have made the match between Ghana and South Africa at the Cape Coast Stadium in Ghana on Sunday interesting. Bafana Bafana will only need a point to go through to the final round, a play-off match against one of the other nine group winners.
