Ethiopia Reports 207 New Covid-19 Cases as Recovery Tally Nears 340, 000

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has recorded 207 new Covid-19 infections on Sunday as the national recovery tally nears 340, 000.

The East African nation confirmed the latest positive cases after conducting a total of 4, 176 tests in the past twenty-four hours.

A further 8 patients have also died due to the acute respiratory disease caused by Coronavirus, says the Ministry of Health in its daily Covid-19 report. The national death toll now stands at 6, 459.



Currently, there are 432 seriously sick patients, indicates the report that puts the active case count in the country at 18, 964.

It also reveals 422 patients have recuperated from Covid-19, bringing the recovery tally to 339, 742.

Ethiopia confirmed its first Covid-19 case in March, 2020. Since then, it has identified a total of 365, 167 cases after testing close to 3.7 million people.

Vaccination Drive

Its health officials are still strongly urging the public to observe the health protocols put in place to tackle the pandemic including wearing face masks as they continue to push ahead with the national immunization campaign.

In the past 24-hours, at least 25, 000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered nationwide, data from the Ministry shows.

The Ministry of Health launched the nationwide vaccination drive on March 13, 2021 – a week after its health Ministry obtained 2.2mln AstraZeneca vaccines from the Covax Facility.

To date, authorities have fully vaccinated a total of 3,513, 873 people against the virus while providing more than 4.77 million doses of vaccine. The vaccination drive, which also involves Johnson & Johnson and Sinopharm vaccines, targets to inoculate as many as 22 million people against Covid-19 by January.
