South Sudan’s Cultural Icon Derik Afred Dies at 58: Report

ADDIS ABABA – A prominent South Sudanese artist and cultural icon, Derik Uya Alfred, has died at the age of 58, reported the BBC.

The artist died in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, on Tuesday evening after a short illness, family members told the BBC.



He has been hailed as a cultural treasure, a source of inspiration for many and a legend of African art and culture.

Arrangements are under way to transport his body to his hometown of Wau, in Western Bahr El-Ghazal state, for burial, the report said.
