ADDIS ABABA- South Africa claimed a key win in Group G of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, defeating hosts Ethiopia 3-1 at the Bahir Dar Stadium on Saturday.
The result sees Bafana Bafana top Group G with seven points, one ahead of Ghana who beat bottom-of-the-log Zimbabwe in a similar scoring line on Saturday.
The Walia Ibex are now third with only three points.
The home loss doesn’t not signal the end for Ethiopia in chasing a World Cup ticket as they could still qualify for the next round. But dearth of apt goalkeeper and finishing instinct in the team feared to derail the Walia Ibex the chance.
On Saturday, Goalkeeper Fasil Gebremikael spilled South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick in first-half stoppage time to give South Africa the lead at the break.
Getaneh Kebede levelled for Ethiopia midway through the second period with a fine free-kick but Mothobi Mvala put Bafana Bafana back in front from a long throw with 19 minutes remaining.
Evidence Makgopa lobbed the keeper to make the game safe for the visitors in added time after coming off the bench.
South Africa, who failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, host Ethiopia in the reverse fixture at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 12 October.
