ADDIS ABABA – The International Day of Yoga was celebrated in a big way in Ethiopia in June 2021.
According to the Indian Embassy in Addis Ababa, there were 100 yoga events held in various cities and regions of Ethiopia to commemorate the Day.
Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Robert Shetkintong said, besides India, Ethiopia led the world in commemorating the International Day of Yoga in terms of the highest number of yoga events. Yoga sessions were organised in 26 universities, 50 schools and factories across the country.
Ethiopia first marked the yoga day on 21 June 2015 – a year after the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution to observe International Day of Yoga.
Benefit of Yoga
Yoga is a mind and body practice and strengthens harmony in body and mind. It is an ancient practice that originated in India and involves movement, meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques. Yoga is now a popular form of exercise around the world.
Experts say Yoga has the potential to provide both health and happiness by improving the physical and mental wellbeing of the people, especially given the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mahlet Sebsibe, a yoga teacher from Ethiopia and held a demonstration session on Nahoo TV, said Yoga is key for good health and wellness.
Yoga is not only good for physical as well as mental health but also helps an individual to unite with her/his inner strength and protects us from all negativeness, the experts say.
