Ethiopia Launches Initiative to Plant 6 billion Trees in Kirmet

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has launched the third round of the Green Legacy together with high level Federal and Regional government officials on Tuesday.

This year’s Green Legacy initiative will see planting 6 billion seedlings on 1.9 million hectares of land throughout the country – a billion more than what the country planted last year.

Officials have already readied more than 5.8 billion seedlings to be planted during the rainy season.

This year’s planting campaign takes place under the motto “Let’s Adorn Ethiopia”.

“As Ethiopians, our lives are strongly intertwined with trees and forests. Preventing flooding, food insecurity, environment related conflicts and other adverse effects are in our hands,” said the Prime Minister.

“When I call upon all Ethiopians to ‘Adorn Ethiopia’ the call is to cover our nation green; to see beyond lines of division – regional, ethnic, religious, sex – and in unity dress Ethiopia with the prosperity and dignity the people of this great nation deserve,” he added.

Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy, the Green Legacy initiative is part of the Government’s plan to plant 20 billion seedlings by 2024.
