ADDIS ABABA – At least 20 African migrants died after smugglers threw them overboard off the coast of Djibouti, according International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“At least 20 migrants drowned and 60 others are in distress after being thrown off a boat by smugglers,” said António Vitorino, director general of the IOM, late Wednesday.
“Prosecuting traffickers and smugglers who prey on the vulnerabilities of migrants must be a priority,” he added without mention the citizens of the victims.
It is the third such tragedy in less than 6 months, according to the UN migration agency, which climes over 70 now died during the period.
Migrants from East African nation often try to pass through war-torn Yemen in the hope to get to the Gulf countries and find job.
