Operation in Tigray will ‘Wrap up Soon’, says Abiy
ADDIS ABEBA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday said the “rule of law operation” will “wrap up soon by ending the prevailing impunity” in northern region of Ethiopia.
The “operation is aimed at guaranteeing peace and stability once and for all by bringing perpetrators of instability to justice,” Abiy said.
Tensions between the federal government and the Tigray regional state authorities boiled over into conflict last week.
The United Nations reported that there has been fighting in several parts of Tigray since last Wednesday.
Prime Minister Abiy said the conflict will end soon while downplaying “Concerns that Ethiopia will descend into chaos” as “unfounded & a result of not understanding our context deeply”.
“Our rule of law enforcement operation, as a sovereign state with the capacity to manage its own internal affairs, will wrap up soon by ending the prevailing impunity,” he added.
The Tigray authorities called on the African Union to intervene and start a dialogue.
But Abiy said that attempts to talk had failed over the past two years.
