Sudan Detains 41 after ‘Seizing Ammonium Nitrate’

ADDIS ABABA – The authorities in Sudan have detained 41 people after seizing large quantities of explosives.

The material included four shipping containers of ammonium nitrate, the chemical which exploded to disastrous effect in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, last month.

The public prosecutor said the amount had been enough to blow up the capital, Khartoum.

A spokesman for the security forces said there were fears that dissidents might have been preparing a campaign of sabotage against the Sudanese transitional government, though he did not present any evidence for his claim.
