ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Road Authority has signed on Tuesday seven road construction agreements worth 11.6 billion birr.
The Authority signed the agreements with five local contractors and one Chinese contractor named China TCJu Civil Engineering.
SunShine construction Plc., YOTEK construction Plc., Cross-land construction plc., BEAKA General Business Plc., and Sur Construction Plc are the local contractors.
They are tasked to build roads with a total length of 509 kilometers.
The cost for the road construction projects will be covered by the government, according to the Authority.
The names of the construction projects are Debre Birhan–Deneba-Leme and Juhur-Deneba Roads (108.25Km), Fike Segeg-Gerbo Denen Road (83.844); Humbo-Tebela-Abaya Road (26Km); and Dayo-Girja-Kibremengist and Melka Desta-Mojo Road (63.75Km).
The others are the Jigjiga-Gelelesh-Degahamdo-Segeg Road project (109.82); Hawlatula-Wetraresa-Yayu-Wurache Road Project (85.45Km); and Zalambesa-Alitena-Merewa-Eidagahamus Road project (32Km).
Currently, they are gravel roads that are difficult to use for transportation and need upgrading to asphalt, the Authority said.
The projects are expected to be completed between three to four years, its officials said.
The roads, once they are completed, would strengthen the economy and social interactions between zones and woredas in the country, according to ERA.
