Five People Killed in Car Crash in Western Ethiopia

ADDIS ABEBA – At least five people have been killed in a car accident in Buno Bedele district of Oromia regional state on Tuesday, according to police.

Wakgari Gadissa, head of the district police officer, told the state-run news agency that the head-on collision involving Oro 3-522558 minibus and a rickshaw occurred in the area called Hawa Yember.

Four people inside the rickshaw including the driver had died immediately, he said. The other person who died on the spot was a passenger in the minibus.

Five people who sustained injuries from the accident are currently receiving medical treatment at Bedele Hospital. Wakgari said the police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Despite having one of the lowest per capita car ownership in the world, deadly traffic accidents are common in Ethiopia. At least 13 people die each day due to car accidents, a recent report shows.

Drivers’ and pedestrians’ lack of awareness, poor technical inspections of vehicles, older vehicles, problems related to driving license and poor road quality are often blamed for the increasing road accidents in the country.
