Drug Trafficker Sentenced to 10 years in jail

A federal high court in Addis Ababa sentenced a Nigerian national to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) says Alusius O’Neill was in transit to Abuja city when he was caught with more than 14 kilograms of cocaine on November 12, 2023.

Addis Ababa Airport police found the illicit drug hidden in his luggage during a search of passengers who flew in from Sao Paulo.

Prosecutors charged O’Neill with an illicit drug trafficking charge at the Federal High Court, Lideta Division’s first cross-border Crimes bench.

The defendant pleaded not guilty, denying that he had no narcotic drugs in his luggage.

The prosecutor also presented their material and other witnesses’ accounts to the court that ruled for the accused to defend the charge.

The defendant, however, failed to do so in the subsequent court hearing, MoJ said and was eventually found guilty on account of possessing illicit narcotic substances with the intent of trafficking.

The high court sentenced the drug trafficker to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a 20,000 Birr fine, according to the Justice Ministry.
