Sunday’s deadly attack on prisons and military barricades in Freetown was described by authorities as a “ failed attempted coup”.
AU Commission Chair Moussa Mahamat in a statement today said he “strongly condemns the violence recently unleashed in Freetown”.
The violence “tantamounts to disrupting the peace, democratic dispensation and stability of Sierra Leone,” he said, and commended the Government “for promptly repelling the attacks.”
The assailants reportedly attacked a military barrack and prisons, freeing around 2,000 inmates. Authorities said at least 19 people died in the violence.
