WA Ratifies Gudaf Tsegay’s World 5000m Record

The 5000m World record set by Ethiopian middle distance runner Gudaf Tsegay has been ratified, according to the World Athletics.

The governing body of the sport made the announcement more than two months after Gudaf achieved the world record at the Wanda Diamond League Final.

The mark is Gudaf’s second senior world record of her career and her first outdoors, improving the world 5000m record with her remarkable 14:00.21 run.

Her performance on Sept 17 in Eugene took almost five seconds off the previous world record of 14:05.20 that Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon set in Paris in June.

“I was really angry to not bring back two medals from the World Championships, but I knew from our training I had a lot of potential to do something with my fitness,” she said afterward.

“Even though the conditions weren’t perfect (in Eugene), we thought we could do it,” she added.
