The second women's 1500m semifinals today saw nine women including Diribe Wolteji break 4 minute.

World Athletics Championships: Diribe, Birke Through to 1500m finals

Diribe Welteji and Birke Haylom made it through safely to the women’s 1500m final at the world athletics championships Budapest 23.

Diribe finished second in 3:55.18 from a heat that contained the three Olympic medallists – Faith Kipyegon, Laura Muir, and Sifan Hassan.

Kipyegon won the heat in 3:55.14 while Sifan settled for third in 3:55.48 in the second heat which saw 9 women break four minutes.

Muir (3:56.36) and Katie Snowden (3:56.72) grabbed the next two spots and Australia’s Jess Hull was the last qualifier, 3:57.85. Adelle Tracey missed out by one place but was rewarded with a Jamaican record of 3:58.77.

Like Diribe, youngster Birke finished second behind another Kenyan Nelly Chepchirchir who won the first heat.

Hirut Meshesha will miss out on the final after finishing the first heat 8th in 4:04.27.

Ciara Mageean, Cory Ann McGee, Melissa Courtney-Bryant, and Ludovica Cavalli were the other qualifiers.

The women’s 1500m finals will take place on Tuesday evening.
