ADDIS ABABA – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister on Tuesday met with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs of the United States Molly Phee in Addis Ababa.

The two sides “discussed bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest and ways of boosting cooperation in key areas at bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement today.

During the discussion, Demeke said, we need to work closely to further expedite and fully implement revitalized Ethio-US diplomatic engagements.

Assistant Secretary Phee came to Addis Ababa to attend the IGAD Quartet meeting on and further engage with African leaders and Sudanese civilians on ending the conflict in Sudan.

The peace process in Sudan must be Sudanese-led and Sudanese owned and should be conducted under the auspices of the African Union through the IGAD platform, Demeke noted.

Phee lauded the Government of Ethiopia for hosting the IGAD Quartet meeting and stressed the fact that parties to conflict should commit to a ceasefire to effect political solutions and to dispense humanitarian aid, the statement read.
