Ethiopia, AU Congratulate Turkish President Erdogan for Winning Election

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia and the African Union congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who won Türkiye’s presidential election on Sunday, securing another five years in power.

“Congratulations to President Erdogan.. on your election victory,” Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed tweeted on Monday morning.

“I look forward to further strengthening the relations between our two countries,” the PM added.

AU Commission chairperson Faki Mahamat also extended his “warmest congratulations to President Erdogan” on his re-election.

“The African Union looks forward to continue and strengthen the AU-Türkiye strategic partnership for the benefit of our peoples,” Mahamat said.

President Erdogan ended with over 52% of the vote, based on near-complete unofficial results. The opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 47.84% of the vote.

More than 64.1 million Turkish citizens were registered to vote, including over 1.92 million who earlier cast their ballots at overseas polling stations. The voter turnout for Sunday’s election was 85.71%, according to Turkish Anadolu news agency
