Algeria narrowly Beat Ethiopia to Reach Knockout Stage

The Ethiopia team were beaten 0-1 by the hosts Algeria in their second group A match of the African Nations Champions on Tuesday evening.

The Walia Ibex played the hosts in front of a sold-out 40,000-seat Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

The hosts dominated the opening minutes of the match and the Ethiopian side did well to keep the north Africans at bay and away from the dangerous positions.

The first attempt was a shot by Ahmed Kendouci from a distance in the 21st minute but found an equally alert goalkeeper, who did well to make the save.

Ethiopia almost stunned the home crowd after Chernet Beshah let fly from the edge of the box but couldn’t get enough curl on his strike that went inches wide of goal in the 25th minute.

In the second half, Algeria broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute.

The Ethiopian defenders failed to mark Aimen Hamious at a corner, allowing him to control the ball with his chest and poked it into the net off the hands of goalkeeper Fasil Gebremichael.

Kenean Markneh could have secured a draw for Ethiopia when he got a golden opportunity with just the keeper at his mercy.

He, however, fired the ball straight to the Algerian goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz who did well to help his side secure their second consecutive victory without conceding a goal.

With a narrow win, Algeria became the first team in the tournament to advance to the knockout stage, topping group A with six points with a game at hand.

Mozambique, who came from behind to edge Libya 3-2 on Monday, are second with four points followed by Ethiopia with one while Libya are pointless.

Ethiopia will now look to win in the final group match against Libya who became the first of the 17 teams in Algeria to be eliminated. Algeria will face Mozambique in their last Group fixture.
