Artist Tariku Birhanu ‘Baba’ Passes Away

ADDIS ABABA – Artist Tariku Birhanu, who starred in more than 40 Ethiopian movies, passed away at the age of 38.

The artist, known by many of his fans as Baba, died on Sunday morning after a long illness.

Born in 1977 Ethiopian calendar in Addis Ababa, Artist Tariku started acting at an early age and rose to be one of the fan-favorite artists in the Ethiopian film industry.

His career spanned many roles from acting to directing.

The artist participated in more than 40 Amharic movies including Laundry Boy, Love and Facebook, The Engineers, Kebad Mizan, Abat Hager, Martreza, Wondime Yakob, and Ye’Arada Lij.

Tariku was also an advocator of the work of the Eye bank of Ethiopia – an institution that works to reverse corneal blindness in the country through the collection and processing of donor corneas.

The institution said it was saddened to hear of the death of the prominent actor Tariku in a tribute on Facebook.

“We forward our heartfelt condolences to his family. He was one of our Ambassadors & pledged to donate his cornea upon his death,” the Eye Bank said.

A farewell program has been arranged at the Ethiopian National Theater for Monday morning before his funeral service at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa.

Artist Tariku is survived by his son.
