Ethiopian National Team Coach Wubetu Abate Extends Contact

ADDIS ABABA – Wubetu Abate, head coach of the Ethiopian national team, has extended his contract for two more years.

Wubetu and the Ethiopian Football Federation signed the contract extension on Thursday.

The Federation said the new contract extends his stay as national team head coach until September 2024.

“Details about his new contract will be revealed at an official press conference next week on Monday,” said the football governing body of Ethiopia after the signing.

Wubetu was appointed as the head coach of the national team in September 2020, following the departure of his predecessor Abraham Mebratu.

Since then, he led the National team to qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AfCON) tournament after 8 years of absence.

The Coach has also led the national team to qualify for the 2023 CHAN finals after 6 years of absence.

His next task is to qualify with Ethiopia for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, and he will be in charge of the team during the upcoming CHAN tournament in Algeria in January.

Prior to his appointment, Wubetu had spells in Ethiopia with Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Hawassa Ketema, Fasil Kenema, and Sebeta Ketema.

He is, however, particularly famous for guiding Ethiopia Bunna to their first-ever – and last, to date – Ethiopian Premier League title in 2011, beating cross-city rivals St. Giorgis.
