Ezema Picks Berhanu Nega as Party Leader
ADDIS ABABA – Berhanu Nega (Prof.) has been reelected as the head of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (Ezema) political party on Sunday.
The vote, the second party leadership election since 2019, took place during the first ordinary session of the Ezema’s General Assembly. Over 800 party members attended the two-day meeting.
The incumbent party leader Birhanu was running against his deputy Andaualem Arage for the top position. The contestants were campaigning via social media platforms to get a vote of members of the general assembly until June 30, 2022.
The ballot took place at the final day of the general assembly’s ordinary meetin on Sunday.
In a statement, the party announced Birhanu’s re-election as head of the party. Andualem also congratulated Birhanu for being elected as the leader as soon after the result became official.
Ezema also elected Yohannes Mekonnen as its deputy leader while Abebe Akalu was chosen to serve as the new Secretary-General of the party.
In addition, the party also installed a chairperson and deputy chairperson position, who are responsible for the party’s operations and day-to-day activities.
Accordingly, the party elected Dr. Channe Kebede and Dr. Amanuel Ermon as chairman and deputy chairman of Ezema, respectively, replacing Yeshiwas Assefa and Chane Kebede.
Ezema is relatively a new political party in Ethiopia. Seven political parties, both from abroad and home, dissolved themselves to form the party in 2019.
