Repatriates from Saudi Arabia Top 30, 000

ADDIS ABABA – The total number of Ethiopian nationals airlifted from Saudi Arabia has crossed the 30, 000 mark as the repatriation push continues today.

Ethiopia started airlifting its nationals living in difficult situations in the Gulf nation beginning two months ago on March 30, 2022.

A total of nine weekly flights are being conducting out since then. Authorities carried the first three flights of the week on Monday.

A total of 1, 076 citizens have been repatriated from Saudi Arabia today, said the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs.

Three children are among today’s returnees, said the Ministry, adding that all the repatriates are men.

“All of them have been transferred to a shelter center where they are receiving care and support,” the ministry added. Authorities set up nine makeshift centers equipped with full provisions of accommodations to host the returnees.

The arrivals on Monday have brought the total number of Ethiopians repatriated from Saudi Arabia to more than 30, 198.

Authorities launched the repatriation campaign with a target to bring 102,000 citizens detained in Saudi Arabia’s detention centers and prisons back to their country within ‘5 to 11 months.

The ongoing repatriation process is led by a national committee composed of 16 government agencies. The process includes receiving, rehabilitating, and sending returnees to their respective localities in dignity.

Bringing our citizens back to their country will continue as per the schedule, said Birtukan Ayano, state minister of Foreign Affairs and chair of the committee, during a review meeting last week.
