Ethiopian Carried 4.1mln Passengers in Six-month

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Airlines carried at least 4.1 million passengers in the first-half of the current fiscal year as the demand for passenger travel continues to slowly recover from Covid-19 impact.

The airlines carried 73% more passengers than the same months last fiscal year, said Isaias Woldemariam, Deputy CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group.

The airline was also able to meet 76% of the target its officials set for the period that started in July 2021, according to the deputy CEO.

Isaias said this while presenting the airline’s six month performance report during a review meeting with officials of the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises Administration Holding Agency on Tuesday.

In general though, the Deputy CEO said the Ethiopian’s performance has shown a significant growth as compared to its international competitors in the aviation market disrupted by the pandemic.

The airline has continued to be profitable, said Isaias, with the help of surging demand for air cargo due to an increasing online shopping and pandemic-linked supply chain disruptions.

To date, its Cargo and Logistics Services transported nearly 400 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine to at least 37 countries across the world.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide applauded the group’s positive performance registered at a time when its global competitors struggled to cope with the Covid-induced challenges.

He also urged its officials to continue striving for increased customers’ satisfaction and finish up delayed airport construction projects in various parts of Ethiopia.
