Govt, Manufacturers Agree to Boost Acess to Quality Medicines in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – A government agency and association of local pharmaceutical and medical supplies manufacturers signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure quality medicines availability in Ethiopia.

The agreement was signed between Ethiopian pharmaceutical Supply agency and Ethiopian Pharmaceutical and Medical supplies Manufacturers Association (EPMSMA) on Friday.

Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse, after witnessing the signing ceremony, said the deal is a step in the right direction to ensure access to quality medicines in Ethiopia .

“Advancing the local manufacturing industry is a priority for the Government of Ethiopia,” she said.

The agreement, the minister said, is “a great step on the way forward to ensure access and availability of quality medicines”.

The Minister has also expressed government’s commitment to “make the ecosystem conducive for the expansion and success of the local pharma industry”.

“I would like to thank all stakeholders for their efforts to make Ethiopia a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub,” she added.

According to reports, there are 12 medicine manufacturers and about 38 medical supply and device manufacturers working in Ethiopia and that are licensed by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration.
