NEBE: 7.6mln People Registered to Vote in upcoming Elections, Referendum

ADDIS ABABA – At least 7.6 million people have registered to cast their vote in the upcoming elections in Harrari, Somali and SNNP regional states, the electoral board said on Monday.

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia will hold elections on September 30 in areas where the 6th general elections did not take place on June 21. The referendum of the South Western People of Ethiopia in the SNNP region will also be held on the same day.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Communications Director of the board, Soliana Shimels said a total of 7.6 million people have registered to participate both in the elections and referendum.



At least 22 contending political parties are expected to run for 47 parliamentary and 105 regional councils seats, reports the state-run news agency ENA.

In the first round of the general election held in most parts of the country in June, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s prosperity party won with an overwhelming majority, taking 410 out of 436 parliamentary seats.

The party is expected to form the new government on October 4, 2021.
