Gilgel Gibe II adds 60MW More Electric Power after in-house Maintenance

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) on Monday said Gilgel Gibe II hydroelectric station has added 60MW more electric power to the national grid following an in-house repair and upgrade work.

One of the four turbine-generator units of the power plant was forced to stop generating electricity after a technical problem linked to its needle valve.

The station’s operation manager, Shimeles Adugna said the maintenance and upgrade work carried out by the station’s workers has now brought the unit back online.

The unit is now delivering 105 MW additional electric power to the national power grid, said Shimeles .

Prior to the upgrade work, it had a power generation capacity of 45MW, according to the EEP.

The power station’s officials said preparation is underway to carry out a similar upgrading work on Unit 3 of the power plant, which is located 250 km southwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
