Artist Alemayehu Laid To Rest At Addis Ababa’s St. Trinity Cathedral

ADDIS ABABA – The legendary Ethiopian singer Alemayehu Eshete has been laid to rest in Addis Ababa’s St. Trinity Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon.

Families and fans of the artist, government officials, religious leaders and thousands of Ethiopians attended Tuesday’s funeral service at cathedral.



The legendary singer, 80, died in hospital in Addis Ababa due to a sudden heart attack on Friday.

Many including president Sahlework Zewde and prime minister Abiy Ahmed paid tributes to the singer of ‘Addis Ababa Bete’ and ‘Temar Lije’.

Emerging in the 1960s, Alemayehu became an iconic figure on the Ethio-jazz scene and he performed right up until his last years.

Sending condolences to all Ethiopians, President Sahlework said his “melodious and didactic songs… will be remembered by generations”.
