Covid-19: Ethiopia Records 1,006 New Cases, 21 Deaths

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has registered 1006 more novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases and 21 related deaths on Friday, according to the Ministry of health.

A total 6, 814 people have been tested to identify the latest positive cases in the past 24-hours , claims the ministry in its daily Covid-19 report.

The figure is the highest the ministry has reported in a day since April 30, during which the ministry confirmed 1, 024 infections out of 6,156 tests.

Twenty-one more Covid patients have also died in the same period, taking the tally of fatalities to 4, 539.

The new fatalities reported  is one the highest the country recorded in the recent months.

In the past three weeks, the number of fresh and fatality cases are increasing at alarming rates, according to health officials, who say it may be the start of third wave in East African nation.

Ethiopia now has 21, 289 active cases. Of these, 463 patients are severely ill and are receiving medical treatment in hospitals, claims the report.

As many as 615 patients have also recuperated from the respiratory disease in the reported period, bringing the recovery count to 267,407.

Ethiopia has conducted 3.15 million tests to confirm a total of 293,737 cases, so far.

As part of its response to the pandemic, health officials are now engaged in an immunization campaign.

Nearly 1,000 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 on Friday, bringing the total doses offered in the country to a little over 2,334,742, according to the report.

The ministry of health launched its vaccination campaign on March 13 – a week after the country received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility.
