Ethiopia Sees Highest Covid-19 Cases in Two Months

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has recorded its highest daily rise in Covid cases in the past two months, pushing the confirmed tally close to 280, 000, data from the ministry of health shows on Thursday.

The ministry of health has reported 476 cases on Thursday after conducting more than 5, 800 tests over the past twenty-four hours.

The figure is the highest since Ethiopia confirmed 485 infections more than two months ago, on May 21.

The surge came days Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadess pleaded with the public to abide by Covid-19 guidelines, including wearing face masks, to protect themselves and their families from the deadly disease.



Recovery cases increase

In its Covid-19 update for Thursday, the Ministry also confirmed the death of five people due to health complications related to the acute respiratory disease. The figure has taken the national Covid-19 death toll to 4, 381.

Currently, at least 228 severely ill Covid-19 patients are receiving medical treatment in various hospitals across the nation.

The jump in the daily Covid cases has pushed the nation’s caseload to 11, 854 despite recording one of the highest recovery cases in the past few weeks on the day.

During the past 24-hours, a total of 326 patients have recuperated from the disease, the highes the country registered since July 6, 2021.

Ethiopia confirmed its first Coronavirus infection on March 13, last year. Since then, it has tested more than 3 million people to identify the 179, 629 cases. At least 263, 392 of these patients have already recovered, according to today’s report.

Immunization Campaign Continues

Health officials have continued to push ahead with their immunization campaign on Thursday as part of their effort to control the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to health officials, more than 6, 600 people have been inoculated against the Covid-19 on the day,pushing the total number of vaccine doses provided in Ethiopia to over 2.2 million.

The East African nation started the ongoing immunization campaign on March 13 – a week after the country received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility.

It has also received additional 400, 000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses from the COVAX as well as 500, 000 Sinopharm and 453, 600 Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine doses from China and the United States, respectively.
