Ethiopian Red Cross Society Obtains 100,000 Covid vaccine doses from China

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Red Cross society on Saturday has received 100,000 doses of COVID19 sinopharm vaccine donation from the Chinese Red Cross Society.

At the handing over ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan vowed his country will continue to support Ethiopia’s effort to prevent the pandemic.

“As the comprehensive strategic cooperative partner of Ethiopia, China will continue its support within its capacity to Ethiopia’s anti-pandemic efforts and play an active role as Ethiopia undertakes to boost the economy and improve the people’s lives,” the Ambassador said.

The latest donation has increased the amount of Covid vaccines China offered to Ethiopia to 500,000 doses.

Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said the newly obtained vaccines will enhance the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Ethiopia.

“My sincere thanks to the Chinese government for its continued support to Ethiopia in the fight against COVID-19,” she said.

Out of the total donated vaccines, 40,000 will be delivered to Tigray region, according to officials.

To date, a total of 274, 899 COVID-19 cases has been reported in the East African nation, including  4, 276 deaths and 253, 634 recoveries.

The country is currently engaged in a major immunization campaign as part of its response to tackle the spread of the disease.

As of Friday evening, more than 1.97mln people have been inoculated against Covid-19 since the campaign started on March 13, 2021.
