Dr. Fana Becomes President of Mekelle University
ADDIS ABABA – Dr. Fana Hagos Birhane has been appointed as the President of Mekelle University, announces the Ministry of Science and higher education on Thursday.
Dr. Fana will inspire many more women to hold president positions at Ethiopian public universities, currently held predominantly by men, according to the Ministry.
She replaced Fetien Abay (Prof) who was serving as acting President of the University following the retirement of the university’s long-serving president, Kindey
a Gebrehiwot (Prof).

Dr. Fana began her career as a prosecutor at the Tigray Regional Justice
Bureau and served as an assistant professor of law at Mekelle University for 12 years.
She later served as director of the University’s Gender studies institute and Dean of the College of Law and Governance.
Dr. Fana graduated from Addis Ababa University with a law degree and did her second and third degrees from South Africa’s University of Free States and UK’s Warwick University, respectively.
She did her post-doctorate degree from Africa Science Academy located in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
