Trilateral talks on Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam to Resume Today

ADDIS ABEBA – The African Union announced today that the resumption of talks it’s brokering to resolve a long-running dispute over construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

“The Trilateral Negotiations on the GERD will resume on Tuesday, 27 October 2020, following a seven-week break,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who chairs the AU, in a statement issued on Monday.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi are scheduled to attend the talks, he said.

“It is a reaffirmation of the confidence that the Parties have in an African-led negotiations process, in line with the Pan-African maxim of African solutions to African problems, one of the cornerstones of the African Union,” Ramaphosa said.

The resumption of talks comes two days after Ethiopia summoned the U.S. ambassador over what it called an “incitement of war” between Ethiopia and Egypt by U.S. President Donald Trump over the dam dispute.

Trump said Egypt – would not be able to live with the dam and might “blow up” the construction.

Africa Union chair expects positive outcome from the upcoming talks among the three Nile states.

“Without any doubt, the successful conclusion of the GERD negotiations will enhance and accelerate regional integration, while boosting cooperation and sustainable development in the region, for the benefit of Africa as a whole,” president Ramaphosa concluded.
