Police Intercepts Cannabis en Route to Kenya

ADDIS ABEBA – Police have seized a truck full of cannabis en route to neighboring Kenya, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Revenue said on Wednesday.

The truck plate number 3-A36285 was heading to Kenya from Shashemene town, a southern city of Ethiopia, when forced to stop by the police.

Police said the driver of the car refused to stop at Chuchu customs post when asked to comply.

“Police had to shoot at the tyres of the car in an attempt to stop him after he tried to run past Chiche custom checkpoint near Hawassa city,” says the revenue minister’s statement.

The value of the cannabis seized is estimated to be close to 4.5 million birr or approximately 141,000 US dollars.

According to the 2018 World Drug Report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, cannabis is the most trafficked drug in the world, with over 190 million users.

Despite being illegal throughout Africa except for in Lesotho, cannabis remains the most planted and seized drug.
