Ethiopia Reveals Date to its First Launch Satellite

ADDIS ABEBA – Ministry of Technology said it will launch Ethiopia’s first satellite into space on December 17, 2019.

The Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing Satellite or ET-RSS1 will be launched from China at 6:21 am Ethiopan time, said Getahun Mekuria (Ph.D.), Minister of Innovation and Technology.

Entoto space observatory facility, East Africa’s only space observatory facility located on the 3,200-metre hills of Entoto on the outskirt of the capital Addis Ababa, will be in control of the satellite.

“Ethiopians will be in command of the 70kg satellite,” said Getahun.

Once launched, Addis Ababa says the ET-RSS1 will be used for earth observation, Agricultural, and Environmental Protection.
