ADDIS ABEBA – A fundraising effort named ‘Beautifying Sheger Project’ has garnered at least $17.25 million USD from supporters, revealed the prime minister office.
Few days have left for the fundraising period to end, people and organisations are still chipping in.
The latest funding came from local and international support contributors including from the Italian government which chipped in 5 million Euros.
Two United Nations agencies – UNIDO & UNDP – donated a million dollars each whilst the African Development Bank (AfDB) gave 600,000 US dollars.
Artist Mahdir Assefa has also made unspecified amount contribution at the project’s account number in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE).
The project aims to lift the image and potential of the capital, and aims to create riverside economies, increase urban tourism, and provide the city’s residents with areas of breathing space.
– ‘Dine for Sheger’ –
As part of the ‘Beautifying Sherger Project,’ there will be a dinner event with a theme ‘Dine for Sheger’.
It is scheduled to be held over this weekend and will be the conclusion of the fundraising for the project.
A seat will cost 5 million br but donors will get a plaque with their names along the project route and a photo opportunity with the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
His office has so far revealed the names of the donors for the project in four rounds. Most of them are Ethiopian private banks and insurances, construction firms, public enterprises as well as local businesses.
The project is a three-year initiative of Prime Minister Abiy and aims to develop greens space starting from Entoto to Akaki alongside the 56km river streams until they reach Akaki waste water treatment plant. It will be implemented by Varnero PLC.
