Degitu Azimeraw Triumphs at Barcelona Marathon

Degitu Azimeraw narrowly missed the course record of the Barcelona Marathon as Ethiopian athletes completed the podium in the women’s event.

The organizers say 5,000 marathon runners took part in the Zurich Marató Barcelona 2024 on Sunday.

Ethiopian athletes led the women’s elite group throughout the race, until just before km 30, when Degitu took the lead alone towards the finish line.

She went on to win in 2:19:52 – just eight shy of the course record set by Zeineba Yimer Worku last year.

Her compatriots Shuko Genemo Wote and Meseret Dinke Meleka finished second and third, clocking in 02:21:35 and 02:22:58, respectively.

“I am very happy to have won in Barcelona. I really liked the course,” Degitu said. “I will try to repeat next year, because it is a course that I think can be run even faster and I would like to beat the course record next time”.

In the men’s category, the Eritrean athlete with Swiss nationality, Abraham Tadesse, managed to beat the previous best time of this race (02:05:01), five seconds below the time set by Marius Kimutai in 2023.

Kenya’s Collins Kipkurui Kipkorir finished second in 02:06:44 while his countryman Edmond Kipngetich was third in 02:07:21.
