Ethiopia Completes Fourth Filling of Renaissance Dam

ADDIS ABABA – The fourth filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has successfully been completed, PM Abiy Ahmed announced on Sunday.

The flagship project is being built on the Blue Nile in the western Ethiopian region of Benishangul-Gumuz.

From the project site, Prime Minister Abiy sent out congratulatory messages to the public announcing the fourth and final round filling.

Ethiopia started the $4 billion hydroelectric dam construction project in 2011 through domestic finance mobilization.

“Congratulations to all on the fourth filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Our national perseverance against all odds has delivered,” PM Abiy’s office wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Commissioned by Ethiopian Electric Power, the dam will have an installed production capacity of 5,150 MW, able to produce an average of 15,700 GWh every year.
