Germany to Continue Supporting Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – Germany will not cease providing support to Ethiopia despite a growing need for humanitarian assistance globally, its Foreign Office official says.

Director General for Crisis Prevention and Humanitarian Assistance at the German Foreign Office Deike Potzel made the remark during her official visit to Ethiopia.

Deikel said the people in Germany are aware that Ethiopia – and the Horn of Africa – are suffering from severe drought and the consequences of armed conflict. The situation has been aggravated by the Russia-Ukraine war which led to a sharp rise in global food and agricultural input prices.

“Our humanitarian assistance is based on the principle of neutrality and is purely needs-based,” said Deike. “We are extending aid to anybody in need regardless of ethnicity or political considerations.”

Berlin has allocated 82.3 Million Euros for humanitarian assistance in Ethiopia this year.

“We will continue supporting Ethiopia in 2023,” said the General Director in a statement the European nation’s embassy issued today.
