Vint Cerf, Father of the Internet, in Addis for IG Forum

ADDIS ABABA – Father of the internet, Vint Cerf, has arrived in Addis Ababa today ahead of the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2022.

State Minister of Innovation and Technology (MoIT), Huria Ali welcomed Cerf upon his arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on Saturday morning.

Addis Ababa will host IGF 2022 from November 28 to December 2, 2022, under an overarching theme ‘Resilient Internet for a Shared Sustainable and Common Future’.

MoIT says Cerf is among the attendants of the global forum that facilitates the discussion of public policy issues pertaining to the internet.

Who is Vint Cerf?

Vint Cerf, popularly known as the ‘Father of the Internet, helped co-design the TCP/IP protocols and the preliminary architecture of the internet that we all adore today with Bob Kahn.

Cerf started his career as US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) which was instrumental in creating the internet and related data packet and security technologies.

He’s been with Google since 2005 where he’s helped identify new enabling technologies to create advanced internet-based products and services.

“I focus on doing whatever I can to create conditions under which more Internet infrastructure can be built. This means I need to go where there is no Internet infrastructure to find ways to get it built,” Cerf said in a recent interview with Forbes.

Cerf is recipient of the US National medal of Technology (in 1997) and the ACM Alan M. Turing award, which is also referred to as the Nobel Prize of Computer Science.
