Mane, Oshoala Win CAF Men’s & Women’s Players of Year Titles

ADDIS ABABA – Senegal’s star forward Sadio Mane has been named Africa’s Men’s Player of the Year at the CAF Awards 2022, after leading the Teranga Lions to its maiden Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Senegalese forward beat strong competition from his countryman Edouard Mendy and former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah to retain the title.

Mane, who recently joined the Bundesliga’s Bayern Munich after a trophy-laden spell with Liverpool, become the second Senegalese to win back-to-back awards, emulating his idol El Hadji Diouf.

“I am so excited to win this award. There are so many players that deserved this award, but I have been chosen. I am honored and I thank everyone for this,” he told CAF Online after receiving the award.

This has been the best year for Senegalese football, said the 30-year-old Mane who played a major role in Senegal’s historic first Africa Cup of Nations title in February and qualification to the 2020 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Oshoala Makes History

Nigeria and Barcelona talisman Asisat Oshoala set a new record when she walked away with her fifth Women’s Player of the Year at the CAF Awards 2022 in the Moroccan capital of Rabat.

Oshoala saw off Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout Njoya and Zambia’s Grace Chanda to win the coveted award again at the CAF Awards 2022 in the Moroccan capital of Rabat. In so doing, the Nigerian now goes clear of compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha, standing alone on five African Player of the Year titles.

Oshoala dedicates record fifth CAF Player of the Year to Nigeria’s Super Falcons and her club, Barcelona.

“I had to fight hard to get to this point. I would like to thank all my teammates and my friends at my club FC Barcelona. Muchas gracias,” she said. “I also have to thank my friends in the national team. You are the best teammates in the world.”

Oshoala and the Super Falcons have qualified for the next edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies WAFCON.
