Driver Dies Trying to Escape after Pumping Petrol Using Fake Money
ADDIS ABABA – A driver, suspected of buying petrol using counterfeit currency, killed in a crash as he tried to escape from a Petrol station, said Addis Ababa Police on Friday.
The incident happened on Thursday night at 67 Mazzoria, in Jomo One area of Addis Ababa, the city’s Police said.
The unnamed driver of a blue taxi filled his car’s tank and paid five fake 100 birr banknotes.
The petrol station staff got suspicious about the authenticity of the banknotes, and tried to stop the driver.
However, the man drove off at speed in a bid escape from the scene but crashed with an ISUZU truck parked on the road adjacent to the gas station.
The driver instantly died from the injury he sustained from the accident, said Deputy Inspector Sitotaw Wolde, head of a traffic accident investigation team of the city’s Police.
Two other passengers inside the taxi suffered serious injury. They are now receiving medical care in hospital, said the Police.
