Somalia: African Union Congratulates New Parliamentary Speakers

ADDIS ABABA – Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) has welcomed the successful elections of the Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Somali Senate and House of the People.

Abdi Hashi Abdullahi was elected as Speaker of the Upper House on Tuesday, while Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur “Madobe” voted as Speaker of the House of the People on Thursday.



The Chairperson of the Commission of the AU Moussa Faki Mahamat has extended “warm congratulations” to both newly elected Speaker.

The election of speakers in the parliament and senate are a key step in establishing the new government, which will be in place by May 17.

Chairperson of AUC Mahamat has also called for “a peaceful, timely and credible conclusion of the Presidential elections” in line with the 17 September 2020 and 27 May 2021 agreements.

In this regard, the Chairperson reiterated the full support of the regional bloc and its AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), in “working with all national stakeholders towards durable peace and stability of Somalia.”
